F-Mart Out for Rest of Season

From Press Connects:

Binghamton Mets center fielder Fernando Martinez, who’s considered one of the New York Mets top prospects, will miss the rest of the season with a hand injury.

B-Mets manager Mako Oliveras confirmed the news before Tuesday’s game against the Trenton Thunder at NYSEG Stadium.

For those don’t know, F-Mart sustained a right hand contusion and in late June.

Slgihtly surprising, considering it seemed as though his rehab was going well in St. Lucie. Like I said about Jose Castro, there’s no reason to rush him. After a modest .271/.336/.337, which is actually better than what his batted ball distribution suggests. (.331 BABIP 9% LD%) Expect him to come back stronger and play the first half at AA next year, and hoepfully making the jump to AAA New Orleans after the ASB.

Martinez, 18, who hit .271 in 60 games this season, has been on the disabled list since June 27 with a right hand contusion.

  1. Hey buddy, that hand injury might be severe now. There’s an article that says that Fernando might of busted his Hamate Bone like Gomez did. He will slip sliding down prospect lists in the offseason if he needs that surgery. Don’t be shocked if BA keeps Gomez as a prospect top the top 10 list.

  2. Thanks for the link Mike. Several veteran players have recovered from hamate surgery, but the injuries more serious for younger player, since it can snap them of their power for over a year. Rockies prospect Dexter fowler had that same exact surgery.

BTW, I don’t believe Carlos Gomez will be eligible for Ba’s top 100 list next year, since he spent over 45 days on the big league roster and this is ultimately his rookie year.

  3. I think Gomez will be, since Joe Mauer was BA’s top prospect despite being in the majors for over 45 days and only getting a shade over 100 AB’s back in 2004.
