There’s been strong speculation that Kevin Mulvey was among Fernando Martinez, Deolis Guerra, Carlos Gomez, and Mike Pelfrey, (despite the Boras rumors) as players that the Mets took completely off the table.
Now I understand that number three starters- which me as well as several analysts have repeatedly said is Mulvey’s ceiling- don’t exactly grow on trees. I also understand that if Mulvey were to become even capable of taking the ball every fifth day, having him for six years worth of service time would be a huge asset. Ok, we get that. But to take someone like Mulvey completely off the table is a bit inconcievable to me.
I’m not going to list the reasons why he’s a number three starter. You can read about that here, and a few short blurbs in some other posts. I understand he’s a rock solid kid with nice makeup, and of course, it helps that he’s a jersey boy/Mets fan. But when you consider than Jonathan Niese and Deolis Guerra look as though they’ll join the reigns of the Mets pitching strength in the upper minors, would’ve it have really hurt had they dealt Kevin Mulvey in the right deal?
