Jesus Flores, a catcher with the St. Lucie Mets last year and was selected by the Washington Nationals in the Rule 5 Draft last winter, hit his first career HR this afternoon against the Phillies.
Now, I never was a big fan of Flores’s. Had I had a blog last year, I probably would’ve said he was overrated more times than I’ve said that about Mike Carp this year. He was somewhat like the catching version of Corey Patterson. Very nice power numbers, but uncommonly bad plate discipline. (27/127 BB/K ratio)
Nevertheless, that’s beside the point. Flores, who must stay on the 40 man roster all year or be offered back to the Mets, has had a nice year considering he was in A ball all of last year, (.253/.330/.345) giving him an OPS. of .675. To put that in perspective, Paul Lo Duca, the grand poobah of the Joe Morgan old-skool club, has an OPS. of .679.
Ok. My first reaction after reading this on Blastings Thrilledge was it reminded me of a recent and brilliant quote from Fire Joe Morgan in which, in typical fashion of their site, did their daily goof on a Joe Morgan chat:
Here’s the actual quote from the chat:
Adam (Dayton): Hey Joe! If you were GM of the Reds (there’s a thought), would you deal Griffey Jr and/or Adam Dunn?
Joe Morgan: I would not deal Griffey. I thnk you have to have something/someone in an organization that the young players can look up to, and I think he’s that guy. I would trade Dunn before Griffey, even though Dunn is younger. Trading Griffey won’t solve their problems.
Here’s the awesome goof that they did at Fire Joe morgan:
CINCINNATI, OH – July 20, 2012
In a gruesome and sad moment for sports fans everywhere, Cincinnati Reds’ players Adam Dunn, Coco Crisp, Michael Bowden, and Craig Hansen committed ritualistic suicide at the Great American Ballpark today, the result of five years of depression brought on by a leadership void. “I guess they had no veteran players to look up to,” said a team official. “They were rudderless ships, without a slightly aloof 38 year-old to show them the way.”
Ironically, all four were having excellent years on the field.
The End.
For the sake of ending this properly, here’s my own quote:
Flushing, N.Y.:- July 20th, 2012
Investigators have finally solved the case as to why Jose Reyes, David Wright, Lastings Milledge, and future HOF catcher Jesus Flores gave up baseball for the thrill of fabricating a rap album. According to Milledge, the for of them had felt depressed ever since the day the Washington Nationals decided to drop Flores from the 40-man roster, and the Mets were forced to cut their heart and soul of the franchise/below replacement level player Paul Lo Duca’s romantic influence on the clubhouse.
Ironically, all four were players were having exceelent years on the field.
The end.

Actually, it was his second career HR. Sorry for the misinformation.
Good point about Flores. I didn’t expect he’d be doing as well as he’s doing. I was surprised when Minaya left him unprotected. Just curious as to how much better, if at all, the catchers he protected are than Flores.
