Update: Carlos Gomez Injury

Turns out that Carlos Gomez’s injury is far more serious than originally thought. While the exact time he’ll be out remains six to eight weeks, the long term effect could actually be quite devastating.

Gomez injured what’s called his hamate,  or unciform bone and is capable of serious sapping him of his power, which is quite important, considering that’s what he needs to develop more than anything else. I’m no doctor, but since two wrists are needed to swing a baseball bat, it shouldn’t matter that the injury too place in his left wrist.

Damon Sublett- who’s ironically playing for the S.I. Yankees now- had the same surgery Gomez will have two years ago, and has yet to regain his power. A poster on anonther board mentioned that Dexter Fowler, who’s currently sidelined with the same injury, “has no shot at my top 200 (All prospects in baseball) list.”

I think that if anything is inevitable at this point, the Alex Rios comparisions, which I thought were a bit of an overstatement at one point, look much more realistic now.

  1. You do realize that Big Popi broke his hamate bone at age 22. Thome broke his, bagwell busted his up. Tulowitski broke his and is hitting for good power.
